Golden Rules for Buying a New Boiler

There are a number of clear issues that need to be considered before investing in a new boiler. The 2 key decisions are, first, which boiler will provide the best long term solution for your needs, and second, which installer would be the ideal one to carry out the works. It is for this reason that we have compiled a short list of points to consider which should make your life easier during this decision making process.

Intial Inspection

The key here is to ensure that the Heating engineer who comes to your property to do an initial call out for repair or quotation must be Gas Safe Registered.

This protects you in 2 ways: the engineer must have experience and knowledge in order to do the works and advise, and also you are protected by a Registered Legal Body, should anything go wrong.

	The following list provides you with other criteria your chosen company to adhere to:
	Have they been in business for a number of years.
	Do they have proven track record ? (ie are you able to see any genuine testimonials)
	What warranties do they provide for their parts and labour?
	Are they fully insured?
	What warranties do they provide for their parts and labour?
	Are they able to carry out a service programme in the future?
	Are they able to offer a full, legally binding quotation?

The Options Available

Having reduced your preferred installers down to a few, you will now need to consider the options put forward to you. It is essential to note, that as important as the price of the installation actually is, it is not the only factor to be considered. A wrong choice of boiler, system or location might appear to be cheaper at the outset, but could prove costly down the line if it has been installed incorrectly or, worse still, illegally.

Again a list of questions which you might want to consider at the decision stage
	Your budget – what do realistically want to spend on the installation.
	Boiler location – attic, kitchen, utility room. Flue and pipework arrangements need to be considered.
	Boiler type – are you looking to reduce space, have instantaneous hot water or have stored water, greater shower pressure and an option for solar panels in the future.
	Water usage – what is the household size. If there are number of people living in the house, using taps at the same time, perhaps a Combination boiler isn’t the best solution.
	Future plans- are you are intending to do a loft conversion. If this is case, a system boiler with a sealed cylinder in the garage for example might be the best answer.

The Quotation

Having received all the quotes, the decision now rests with yourself and the confidence you have with each of the installers. When looking through the quotes, ensure that everything you have spoken about is covered. It is important to judge each quotation like – for – like. The exclusion of a Magnaclean or a Powerflush may serious affect the performance of the boiler and also invalidate a 5 Year warranty as well.
